Varsity Preps 2014 Tennessee Top 30

College football recruiting has been on the rise in the state of Tennessee over the past few years and the 2014 class has the looks of a deep group of players that could all find themselves playing on the Division 1 level.

These rankings are by opinion only and are an early indication as to who the top high school football players are in the state of Tennessee for the 2014 recruiting class.

Tennessee Top 30

1. (WR) Josh Malone – 6’3 190 lbs – Gallatin, TN (Station Camp HS)

– Malone is an elite level wideout that has collected over 25 BCS offers and could be the best pure talent in the 2014 class.

2. (RB) Jalen Hurd – 6’3 230 lbs – Hendersonville, TN (Beech HS)

– Hurd led the state of TN in rushing as a Jr and is currently committed to Tennessee.

3. (DT) Charles Mosely – 6’4 355 lbs – Brighton, TN (Brighton HS)

– Mosely is a physically impressive lineman that has the size and talents to play on the BCS level.

4. (S) Todd Kelly Jr – 6’1 190 lbs – Knoxville, TN (Webb School)

– Kelly Jr is a football legacy in Knoxville that has already made his commitment to Tennessee.

5. (OT) Alex Bars – 6’6 288 lbs – Nashville, TN (Montgomery Bell Academy)

– Bars has tons of potential and comes from a family that has sent multiple members into college football.

6. (LB) Petera Wilson – 6’3 220 lbs – Memphis, TN (White Station HS)

– Wilson is a tackling machine that has garnered interest from BCS programs from all over the country.

7. (TE/DE) Derek Barnett – 6’4 240 lbs – Brentwood, TN (Brentwood Academy)

– Barnett is an athletic and versatile player that is being heavily recruited by BCS schools for both sides of the ball.

8. (S) RaShaan Gaulden – 6’1 180  lbs – Thompson Station, TN (Independence HS)

– Gaulden has big time potential at safety and he is a sought after prospect by many around the south.

9. (OG/DT) Jashon Robertson – 6’3 278 lbs – Nashville, TN (Montgomery Bell Academy)

– Robertson is a physical mauler that has been committed to Vanderbilt since last fall. All-State wrestler as well.

10. (DT) Michael Sawyers – 6’2 285 lbs – Nashville, TN (Ensworth HS)

– Sawyers has quickly made a name for himself because of his potential and ability to play DT in the college ranks.

11. (S) Emmanuel Smith – 6’2 200 lbs – Murfreesboro, TN (Oakland HS)

– Smith made a commitment to Vanderbilt last month and could be steal for the Commodores in the future. Big and very athletic

12. (Ath) Cornelius Sturghill – 5’11 172 lbs – Memphis, TN (Melrose HS)

– Sturghill is a player that is being recruited by multiple D1 schools and could star for a program on either side of the ball.

13. (WR) Thomas Richard – 6’1 190 lbs – Nashville, TN (Christ Presbyterian Academy)

– Richard is a very talented prospect that is beginning to make a name for himself among D1 college coaches. Smooth and athletic playmaker.

14. (QB) A.J. Long – 6’1 182 lbs – Lebanon, TN (Friendship Christian Academy)

– Long led his FCA team to a Tennessee state title as a Jr and is currently committed to Syracuse. Dual threat QB.

15. (RB) D’Andre Ferby – 6’1 190 lbs – Nashville, TN (Ensworth HS)

– Ferby missed most of his 2013 season due to injury but has the talents to star as an upcoming Sr. Could be best RB in TN?

16. (Ath) Vic Wharton – 6’0 182 lbs – Thompson Station, TN (Independence HS)

– Wharton is an athletic playmaker that has decided to play his college ball with Tennessee. Could play on either side of the ball.

17. (QB) Luke Ward – 6’3 190 lbs – Decaturville, TN (Riverside HS)

– Ward is a strong armed passer that has generated strong interest from several BCS programs.

18. (OT) Paul Adams – 6’6 275 lbs – Nashville, TN (Christ Presbyterian Academy)

– Adams has yet to reach his maximum potential and thats why college coaches are enamored with his talents. BCS talent.

19. (WR) Devin Perry – 6’0 190lbs – Memphis, TN (Memphis University School)

– Perry is a playmaker that has excellent hands and the ability to make something happen at any given time.

20. (Ath) Nikia Cathey – 5’9 173 lbs – Memphis, TN (Westwood HS)

– Cathey is currently committed to Mississippi St and has the playmaking skills and athleticism to star in the SEC.

21. (DT) Austin Barrett – 6’3 285 lbs – Murfreesboro, TN (Oakland HS)

– Barrett is a hard working mauler that is not afraid of contact and could be a steal for whatever D1 school signs him. Underrated prospect.

22. (Ath) DeJuan McQuarters – 5’10 170 lbs – Memphis, TN (Mitchell HS)

– McQuarters is a playmaker that is rising on college coaches recruiting boards and he could see his stock blow up soon.

23. (OL/DL) Xavier Forrest – 6’3 280 lbs – Nashville, TN (Ensworth HS)

– Forrest is a two way lineman that has the talents to play on either side of the ball in college. Very athletic for his size.

24. (RB) Jalen Manning – 5’10 190 lbs – Carthage, TN (Smith Co. HS)

– Manning is a beast at RB that is physically built to run his opponent over and keep churning his legs down field. D1 sleeper.

25. (LB) Trey Moore – 6’2 210 lbs – Memphis, TN (Memphis University School)

– Moore is an athletic LB that can cover ground in the passing game but also make plays behind the line of scrimmage.

26. (OG/DT) Bruno Reagan – 6’4 285 lbs – Clarksville, TN (Clarksville HS)

– Reagan is an all state wrestler that loves being physical and that toughness has led to D1 interest. Early Austin Peay offer.

27. (RB) Denzel Harding – 5’10 175 lbs – Murfreesboro, TN (Siegel HS)

– Harding is a fast and athletic RB that is sitting a bit under the radar but has the talents to play on the D1 level.

28. (RB) Malachi Horton – 5’11 190 lbs – Morristown, TN (Morristown West HS)

– Horton had a very productive Jr season and his talents are beginning to become noticed among D1 college coaches.

29. (OG) Caleb Yates – 6’4 282 lbs – Murfreesboro, TN (Oakland HS)

– Yates is a sleeper o-line prospect that plays with great physicality and has the run blocking skills to play now in college.

30. (Ath) Ty Jobe – 6’2 182 lbs – Watertown, TN (Watertown HS)

– Jobe is a small school standout that has the football talents to play multiple positions on the Division 1 level. Two sport star (basketball)
