It seemed just yesterday that I talked with Derek Fontenot about his son Noah for the first time.  Noah at the time was just coming out of a great junior season where the 6’0 220 pound Linebacker from St Thomas More had amassed a 2015 season to remember.  His 2015 stats included 123 tackles (73 solo) three forced fumbles, and six sacks.  The Cougars posted a 10-3 record and a trip to the Superdome to play in the State Championship Game against Parkview Baptist of Baton Rouge, LA.  That game, Fontenot recorded 22 total tackles, 12 of which were solo tackles; however, the Cougars fell in defeat to the Eagles 24-21.

After that loss there was only one thing on Noah’s mind – get bigger, faster, and stronger in order to get back to The Dome his Senior year.  Whatever it took he was going to lead his team back to fight for a Championship one more time, it was going to be his Senior Year.  As the spring began, Noah started seeing his recruiting pick up and was getting ready for his spring game and camp season.  Then the Spring Game, during a play he suffered an ACL injury.  The pain at that very moment was nothing compared to the thoughts of his plans for his senior season.  In his heart he knew he would get back on that field, whatever it took.

After his surgery Noah set out on a strict rehab, with those around him pushing him and supporting him the entire way.  With the support of his family, friends, teammates, and his coaches, he took to the road of recovery with vengeance.  He fought just like a true warrior does.

When you ask Noah who the biggest influence is in his life and who was pushing him during his rehab, there was no doubt who it would be, “My biggest influence in my life is my family because everything I do is to honor them and throughout my rehab I was pushed by coaches, friends, teammates, even strangers. I had so much support by people wanting to see me back out there it was truly a blessing and I just knew God had a plan and knew this is what he wants me to do. So I never got down on myself just went day by day and its all paid off.  As you know we are playing in the Super Dome Friday!!”

Just 4.5 months after his ACL injury, Noah returned to the field to fight with his brothers.  The last several weeks he has seen limited playing time to get back up to speed and test himself.  Each game he earned more and more playing time, and by Week 6 he moved back to the starting lineup.  This Friday, Noah Fontenot and the rest of a very talented Cougar team will return to the New Orleans Superdome for the Division II Championship, against none other than Parkview Baptist of Baton Rouge,

The drive and determination this young man has to push himself and the leader that he has become through this injury is remarkable. That one thing that drove him the hardest, the goal of leading his team to the Superdome and to play for a State Championship one more time his Senior Year, it never left his heart or his thoughts.

How will it turn out, we will see Friday at 5 pm, but one thing I can tell you about this young man is there is no quit in him and the “Whatever It Takes” mentality spreads to his teammates.  It Will Be A Great Game!
