Rising Star: 2014 South Dade ATH Tyree Horton

2014 ATH Tyree Horton (6’1, 215, 4.71) of South Dade High in Florida is an athletic, physical defender that excels at both outside linebacker and defensive end. The talented junior is just now starting to see his recruitment take shape with a few offers. “Duke and FAU have offered. The Duke staff tells me they want me to camp in June, that they’re building a competitive program, and that I’ll like them so much I’ll want to commit,” he said of the Blue Devils. “FAU is following me closely, they’re encouraging me to make good grades and to perform well this spring. I’m planning on visiting in June.”

Last night, Horton added his third verbal offer from the Purdue Boilermakers. He told Varsity Preps he’s also hearing from Marshall, Illinois, Illinois St., and Western Kentucky currently.

He mentioned what a couple of the programs recruiting him are telling him. “Western Kentucky said they’re coming down to the spring game and may offer,” he said. “Illinois likes my potential, wants me to camp and visit. The coaches are waiting on my SAT score to come back before they offer.”

The number one factor in his recruitment will be how early he can hit the field. “I want to contribute early, so playing time will be the biggest factor for me.”

Horton has plans to camp at Louisville, FIU, and Florida over the summer.

This offseason, Horton’s been making a name for himself starring at linebacker for Hardknocks, a 7-on-7 team based out of South Florida. He’s also been working to increase his speed and agility to make him a more effective pass rusher. “I have good speed and quickness, but I’ve been working on my footwork and concentrating on bringing my 40 time down.”

It’s still nine months till signing day, but Horton has a clear-cut leader. “FAU is my leader.”
