Varsity Preps

Part 2 Prelude To “The Road To The Dome” – Newcomers and Veterans East Ascension/WoodlawnBR

Next stop was a visit to the East Ascension Jamboree – The Spartans hosted the Woodlawn (BR)  Panthers
This Jamboree was unique in the fact that each level of the programs had time on the field. Freshmen, Junior Varsity and Varsity Squads each had two halves.

The Freshmen Jamboree comprised of only true Freshmen.

The starting quarterback for the Spartans was 2021 Jacob Falgoust. Falgoust is a dual threat quarterback that showed his ability to move out of the pocket and take to the run to gain yards if necessary to get the first down as well as a nice arm and touch on the ball. He worked through simple progressions and could find his target on the field.

Two offensive weapons that stood out for the young Spartans –

#16 WR Navell Chopin, who caught a 35 yard pass from Falgoust for a first down. Chopin in a long rangy wide receiver that has the ability to be a welcomed addition to the wide receiver core for the Varsity team in the future.

#22 RB Kael Babin a quick and slippery running back that already has a nice stiff arm and is hard to bring down.

Defensively for the Spartans several future big guys that comprised the nice defensive set 2021 #90 Marcus Banks #43 Johnny Alo and #40 Kelvon Mitchell

Junior Varsity added their own excitement to the night as both teams fought hard defensively to limit their opponents offensively.  East Ascension took the contest 3-0 over the Panthers.

Top Moment of the Game: The Woodlawn Panthers JV defense showed great discipline and speed to the ball when the Spartans offense entered the red zone of the Panthers. The Panthers held the Spartans to only a field goal, which was the only points in the game. (3-0 Spartans over the Panthers in JV Action)

Varsity for both East Ascension and Woodlawn Baton Rouge is stacked with 2018 D1 Prospects. Names like  OL (6’6″ 271) Cameron Wire (LSU Commit) East Ascension,  SS/RB Xavier Lodge (La Tech Commit) for Woodlawn Baton Rouge, and DT (6″4″ 290) Kyron Mims (Top 4 Programs – Colorado State, ULM, Ball State, Samford.).

The saying “defense wins championships” was very prevalent during the game.  At the 8 minute mark the senior laden Panther defense forced a quick three/out and the Spartans were forced to punt inside their 10 yard line.  The punt was muffed and the Panthers took over at the 1 yard line. Three plays later 2018 QB (6’0″ 185) Brian Byrd hit 2019 WR Bryson Reaser in the back of the end zone for a touchdown to give the Panthers the lead 7-0.

The Spartans answered with an offensive attack of their own as #5 SB Shemar Thompson fought off tacklers to scamper into the end zone for the Spartans; however, 2018 WR/DB #14 Daron Mosely, for the Panthers, blocked the extra point.  (Score: 7-6 Panthers)

Top Moment of the Game: With under a minute remaining the Panthers faced a big third down. Byrd handed off to Senior ATH (Louisiana Tech Commit) Xavier Lodge who broke through defenders off the left side for a 22 yard gain and a much needed first down. This allowed the Panthers to run the clock out.  A big part of this play’s success was the work of the offensive line and Senior WR Daron Mosely, who used his great blocking skills down field to seal off the Cornerback from coming up to make the play on Lodge. The final score of the game was Woodland Panthers defeating the EA Spartans 7-6.
