Mahalak gets dream offer, commits same day

Call it patience, confidence or naivety, but whatever you call it, there was only one offer Marin Catholic (Novato, Calif.) quarterback Morgan Mahalak was going to genuinely entertain.

That offer came Tuesday morning and by that afternoon he called back to verbally commit to being an Oregon Duck.

Mahalak held six other offers, including one from the Ducks’ in-state rival Oregon State, but there really wasn’t a Plan B in place if Oregon didn’t come calling.

“I was really just being patient and I knew if Oregon came around, that would be it for me and fortunately that happened,” Mahalak said. “I think if it didn’t I’d be in a bit of a pickle. I don’t know where I’d go.”

The major selling points for Mahalak was the caliber of the program, coaching staff, being relatively close to home and the university offers the major of sports business management, which he wants to pursue.

Oregon offensive coordinator and former national championship quarterback (with Nebraska) Scott Frost visited the Marin Catholic campus and left Mahalak a message to call him.

Mahalak immediately called him and Frost told him the Ducks’ staff saw some similarities in him and current Oregon starter Marcus Mariota and they really liked him and want him to be their guy.

That’s all he really needed to hear.

Mahalak has visited Oregon four times in the past and he raved about the beautiful the picturesque campus, but he was even more enamored by the community support.

“The cool thing is that town is so into their football team and the support is just endless there,” Mahalak said. “Just to know every game you play in there is going to be as people as possible in the stadium. There will never be a non-sell out game there.”

Coincidentally, none of those four visits were for a Ducks football game. But the class of 2014 signal-caller got a sampling of what Autzen Stadium is all about when he attended the Oregon Spring Game.

More than 36,000 fans piled into Auzten Stadium to get the first glimpses of what will be the 2013 Ducks squad.

“That was ridiculous—great atmosphere,” Mahalak said. “I’ve watched them all my life, it’s just an awesome place to play.”
