Kosnitzky’s Korner: Palm Beach Gardens Challenges Miramar in an 8A Regional Final

When Palm Beach Gardens Quarterback, J.P. Caruso and his Gators teammates tangle with visiting Miramar Patriots on Friday Night at 7:30, it will be sort of a déjà vu. He and seniors on his team remember losing on the Patriots home field 35-7 in the 2011 Region 3-8A Final.  Likewise, Palm Beach Gardens (8-4) and Miramar (12-0) meet in this year’s Region 3-8A Final.

With losses to Dwyer, Vero Beach, Park Vista and Palm Beach Central, the Gators will enter this game as 27 point underdogs. On a positive note, Palm Beach Gardens was able to avenge two of those losses with victories over Park Vista and Palm Beach Gardens during the past two games. Caruso blossomed last week in throwing for 246 yards and two touchdown passes.   Running Back, Tommy Monday will need to have the same success he had last week when he ran for 180 yards at over 6 yards per carry.  Receiver, A.J. Shipman has led the team in receiving throughout the year.

Aside from a mid-season victory over St. Thomas, Miramar has been dominant.  Last week, the Patriots had little trouble dismantling then undefeated  Deerfield Beach 43-6. Quarterbacks Nick Jeanty and Gernald Hawkins threw for a combined 300 yards last week before the inception of a running clock. Eric Pittman has led the team in all purpose yards in key games.  Receivers Khalil Lewis, Kwasim West and Keygon Dunnings will again be active participants when Miramar runs their spread offense.

When Miramar is playing their “A” game they can compete with anyone which Deerfield Beach experienced last week. Palm Beach Gardens will have to find a way to get through Miramar’s Darkside Defense. The Patriots will sometimes take breaks for a series or two.  However, their potency through the air and on the ground may be too much for their Palm Beach foe. More likely than not, I expect Miramar to get through unscathed and advance to the state semifinals in Miami-Dade County next week.
