Kosnitzky’s Korner: Miami Columbus: Could this be the year?

Last December, and despite their ups and downs, the Columbus Explorers were again one game away from making a trip to Orlando and playing for the FHSAA 8A Title.  However, Cypress Bay would have their own answers, scoring the first 26 points and knocking off the Explorers 33-13 in the state semifinal game.  The Explorers learned that despite two consecutive trips to the state semifinals, the drought in making the big game now would stand at 32 yrs.

While Daryl Chestnut, Lorenzo Woodley and Jesus Wilson are gone, the team still has the leadership of Junior QB Tucker Beirne who continued to mature throughout last season.  Oshton Armstrong at RB and Sasha Kelley at WR will help support the offense and LB Nick McBeath will help support the defense.

With a schedule and district alignment within a region predominated by many mid level teams, Columbus should fare well through the regular season and early rounds of the playoffs. This team is too good to perform otherwise. However, in order for the Explorers to match or surpass recent achievements, they must find a way to address some of their line play in my opinion.  The importance of controlling the line of scrimmage was magnified in their defeats last season.  Despite any weaknesses, I expect Columbus to be in the conversation in Region 4-8A and beyond all year and maybe this will be the year they finish their season in Orlando.
