Kosnitzky’s Korner: Lightning and Suns

After pounding Coral Springs Taravella and Miami Norland by a combined score of 108-26, the Ft. Lauderdale University School Suns (2-0) travel back to Western Broward County to challenge the Weston Cypress Bay Lightning (1-0) this Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.  While ranked 19th nationally in the Rivals 100 poll, the Suns are overshadowed at times by Miami Booker T. Washington, Miami Central and Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas who are ranked 1st, 4th and 19th respectively.

The defending 3A Florida State Champions have moved up to 4A and like it or not they are projected to face defending 4A Florida State Champion Booker T. Washington in the 2nd round of the playoffs later this year.  Shaun White, Quincy Wilson and Jordan Scarlett are two of the many players that have led University School in the early weeks.  Their coach, Roger Harriot knows that games against top teams will help prepare the Suns for their playoff test later in the season.

Cypress Bay, smarting off a preseason loss and absence of  their coach, Mark Guandolo for a few weeks due to “Slap Gate” found their groove last week after beating Lauderhill Boyd Anderson 27-0 in front of their home crowd last week.  The Florida Class 8A Runnerup lost experience in many skill positions but regardless of the team’s status, the school is never neglected from supplying big, physical lineman on the offensive side of the ball.

With the coach back, look for the team in Blue and Gold to insert their will they way have done so many times in the past or maybe the team in Green and Gold will have enough skill to compensate for their lack of size on the line. We shall see.
