Kosnitzky’s Korner: Booker T. Washington Wins More an Event Than a Game

It happened.  The top 2 teams in the country met again.  The defending 4A and 6A Florida State Champs would battle at times in a seesaw match that would captivate their audience.  Thousands would watch online, while a sold out crowd at Traz Powell Stadium would remain glued to their seats wondering if the team in Green (Miami Central) could come from behind once again.

Trailing and needing a touchdown in the last minute, the Rockets would move to the Booker T. Washington 25.  Fortunately for the Tornadoes, Terry Jefferson would later intercept a deflected pass and run 75 yards the other way into the Rockets end zone to seal the victory for the Orange and Black.  Ironically, Booker T. Washington’s 28-17 victory over Miami Central was by the same margin they lost the previous year. Dalvin Cook (11/60) and Joseph Yearby (21/128) efforts at running back were not enough for Miami Central which actually led in the fourth quarter.  For Treon Harris and Booker T. Washington, his leadership at quarterback and ability to score the go ahead touchdown would shine more than his 130 yard passing performance.

It was reported by the Miami Herald that 7,500 were there to see this live event but to me it seemed like a few thousand more. This at times, was as much an event as a the game itself.  Within the end zone and sideline areas I was scattered with mayors, the superintendent and other district officials, along with former NFL players and a prominent Division 1 Head Coach.  Local, state and national media at the game would refer to many of the players on a first name basis which questioned the need for team rosters that were provided by school staffs.

Both teams now proceed through the next chapters of their seasons. The reality is their main focus is to compete in the district and repeat as state champions. There is no questions that most expect to find both teams in Orlando in December.  We will always debate who is the best team in our community?  However, on this September evening, Booker T. Washington reigns supreme of what was more an event than simply a game.
