Freshman SS Terrell Powell Already Hearing from FSU, MSU

2017 SS Terrell Powell (5’10, 184) of FAMU DRS had an impressive freshman season, finishing with 50 tackles, one pass deflection, two fumble recoveries, and forced one fumble. As an eighth grade starter on the varsity squad last year, he recorded three interceptions and two pass deflections.

The standout freshman told Varsity Preps he’s already receiving interest from Florida St.Mississippi St., and Georgia St.

“I attended the FSU camp last summer. I stood out during drills, so one of the coaches pulled me aside and we spoke for a few minutes,” Powell reports. “I visited FSU unofficially several times during the season, attending games when they played Miami, Syracuse, and Idaho. During one of my visits, I got to chat with head coach Jimbo Fisher for a few minutes. When we were speaking, he remarked about my size, was surprised I was so young.”

Powell visited Mississippi St. and was invited to the Egg Bowl last weekend.

“I visited Starkville in the summer before my 8th grade year, and they invited me to attend the game versus Ole Miss. I feel like they’re interested, recruiting me heavy,” he said. “When I was on campus last summer, I met head coach Dan Mullen, got to speak with a few of their players, and I toured campus and the facilities.”

He says that the Georgia St. staff was impressed with his playmaking ability when they scouted a practice last spring.

“They came down to evaluate some of our older players, but I stood out to them and they collected all my information.”

Over the offseason, he’s planning to compete at several university camps.

“I’m planning to attend FSU’s camp, hopefully I can seal the deal and get an early offer. I’ll also attend AuburnAlabama, and Georgia’s camp,” he shared. “I’m also thinking about going to the Nike SPARQ camp.”

Powell discussed who he likes to watch on Saturdays, hoping one day he’ll have the opportunity to suit up for one of them.

“I like Florida St., but I have family in Alabama, so I enjoy watching both programs,” he admitted. “I’d also have to put Mississippi St. in there. They gave Alabama a run for their money a few weeks ago. I’ll find out who else I can put in there as the process moves forward.”

There’s plenty of room for improvement and Powell understands he has work to do to achieve his goal of being offered by his favorite programs.

“I’m concentrating on loosening my hips up, my change of direction, so I can cover at an elite level. I’m also jumping rope to work on my feet, and I’ll do some speed work to lower my 40 time.”

The young safety mentioned he likes the physicality of his position.

“I’ve always had to play against older kids because of my size and I’ve never had a problem going toe-to-toe with them,” he said. “I like to come downhill and hit, I like contact. I have coverage ability, too, so I feel like I can do both well.”
