Chris Okoye Looks To Land More Division 1 Offers

A number of superb defensive linemen have come out of Detroit (Mich.) Catholic Central, including Mike Martin (2008), Matt Godin (2012), and Wyatt Shallman (2013). Ironically they have all gone on to the University of Michigan.

Junior defensive tackle Chris Okoye looks to continue that trend in 2014. Okoye hasn’t heard much from the Wolverines, but says he would love to, and from Michigan State. “I visit MSU tomorrow, and I’ll be attending Michigan and Michigan State’s camp this summer,” Okoye said.

At 6-6, 310-pounds it’s hard not to notice Okoye on the field, and he certainly looks the part. But his recruitment has been slow as of late. “I was hurt during my junior season, and wasn’t really able to show off my abilities. No one really knows about me yet.”

He does hold offers from Eastern Michigan and Saginaw Valley State, and interest in his services will only continue to grow.

“I’m on a Division 1 mission”, said Okoye. “I have other interest from Cincinnati, Miami (Fla.), Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and Any more campus visits planned soon or camps you will attend? Eastern Michigan.”

The Saginaw Valley State coach says he likes my physical appearance, and was very impressed with my play. He said he knows I’m getting a lot of D1 looks, but he still wanted to offer me in case I wanted to go there.”

Detroit Catholic Central has lost the last two Division 1 state titles in Michigan to Detroit Cass Tech, and Okoye will be looked upon to be a senior leader on the defense.

“Playing for Catholic Central is very special to me. I love the coaches, the tradition and the brotherhood.”

“Losing in states, especially back-to-back years was traumatic experience. I wish I could have contributed more. But in order to rebound this year we’re just working and training extremely hard in every aspect of our game.”

Okoye has performed well on the camp circuit, winning D-line MVP at both the Rivals Big-Man Elite Camp and the Adidas Invitational. He looks to continue that success at several other camps this summer including the Sound Mind Sound Body Camp in June, the Rivals camp in Cincinnati April 20, and the NFTC in Chicago May 5.
