California DB Asauni Rufus commits to Nevada

Bakersfield (Calif.) senior Asauni Rufus saw enough on his trip to Nevada this past weekend to convince him the Wolf Pack is on track to return to national prominence and gave the Pack his verbal commitment on Wednesday.

“Seeing what Coach (Brian) Polian and the coaching staff is building with all the young great players they already have, in addition to all the talented prospects they have committed, there’s no way we can’t build Nevada into a power” Rufus said.

Rufus, who has quarterbacked the Drillers for the past two seasons, will move to the other side of the ball to play safety at the next level.

Although he’s played strictly at the quarterback position the past two seasons, he started at safety as a sophomore on the Drillers’ undefeated 2011 Valley Championship team.

The Wolf Pack coaching staff reportedly remained confident in Rufus’ ability to play on the defensive side of the ball and Rufus looks forward to working with his new teammates next season.

“The guys there are good people and they’re hungry, that’s what I want to be apart of,” Rufus said. “I want to contribute to building a stout defense.”

In his visits to Reno, he’s been impressed with the support the team receives from both the community and the administration.

“The school from an educational standpoint was a lot better than I anticipated,” Rufus said. “They really take care of their students in general, let alone student-athletes. It’s a very beautiful place.”

Rufus’ Drillers are 6-2 on the season, as they prepare to host Centennial on Friday.
