2016 QB Kato Nelson, McArthur High, FL

2016 QB Kato Nelson (5’11, 165, 4.69) of McArthur High in Florida is making a name for himself early in the recruiting process by seeing time at quarterback for the Florida Fire, back-to-back champions of the last two tournaments they’ve appeared in.

The freshman quarterback talked about his tournament experience. “I did well, making reads and getting the ball out quick. WRs Shawn Burgess-Becker, Odis Grimes, Jr. and Jovon Durante caught everything and helped lead us to victory,” he said. “Being able to compete against the top talent in the area is great practice. It’s definitely helping me prepare for opponents in the fall, and I’ve learned I need to pick my game up, get faster and stronger.”

McArthur’s starting signal-caller has interest  in AlabamaFSU, and Miami and will camp at all three over the summer.

Nelson told Varsity Preps he’s visited Miami recently. “I attended a Hurricanes practice not long ago. The pace and tempo is faster. It’s a great program, everything and everyone seems focused.”

He feels his demeanor in the pocket is one of his strengths. “I stay calm and poised, stand tall and deliver a catchable ball.”

Boasting a solid 3.2 GPA, Nelson spoke about what he will be seeking from a program on the next level. “I’m looking for a solid staff and since I feel I’m a dual-threat, I’ll be looking for a spread offense.”

Nelson has a couple of goals for himself this upcoming fall. “Of course I’m still working toward my first offer, but I’m concentrating on just getting better overall and getting my team on the path to a state championship.”
