Rising Star: 2015 WR Shawn Burgess-Becker

2015 WR/S Shawn Burgess-Becker (6’2, 190, 4.5) of Monarch High in Florida is taking 7-on-7 football by storm and has made quite a name for himself in just a matter of a few weeks. His stellar play at wide receiver against elite competition has certainly grabbed the media’s attention.

Burgess-Becker spoke about the benefit of playing for the Florida Fire 7-on-7 team. “Before this 7-on-7 season, nobody knew who I was. It’s allowed me to get my name out there and it’s definitely worked to my benefit.”

Last season as a sophomore starter, he was making plays in the secondary. “I didn’t play receiver last year, but I had 63 tackles and five interceptions at free safety.”

He’s an outstanding athlete, also starring for the Monarch basketball team. “I was a freshman starter on the varsity team, playing guard. I averaged 17 points a game, with a high of 34 against Boyd Anderson.”

Burgess-Becker is new on the recruiting scene, so new in fact he hasn’t had time to decide what will be important to him during the recruiting process. “I’m still deciding some things. Location, early playing time, none of that matters at this point and I’m open to any programs that are interested in me. I’ll do whatever’s necessary to play on the next level.”

In addition to attending several college camps over the summer, the speedy sophomore is concentrating on getting bigger and faster in preparation for next season. He spoke about his goal for 2013. “It’s all about the team. I need to help my team be more successful than last year and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that happens.”
