2015 Watch List DT Darius Smalls, Sandalwood

2015 Watch List DT Darius Smalls (6’3, 345, 4.85 shuttle) of Sandalwood in Jacksonville, Florida played both ways last season for Wolfson, seeing time at guard and defensive tackle. He posted 57 tackles, four tackles for loss, and two sacks as a junior.

Smalls claims no offers at the moment, but expects that to change soon. “FSU, Miami, Louisville, Florida, South Carolina, Mississippi St., Ohio St., and Maryland are recruiting me actively.”

Sandalwood’s talented big man is making a trip to Tallahassee today. “I’m heading to FSU’s camp, they want to see me at guard first, then defensive tackle.”

He’ll also visit Columbia, SC next month. “The Gamecocks want to see me at their camp, they’re interested in me playing guard,” he said. “I’m planning on attending the South Carolina OL/DL camp in July.”

Miami is showing the big tackle a lot interest. “I’m getting a lot of mail from the Hurricanes, they want me to camp later this month.”

Smalls listed several of favorite schools currently. “My Top 5 right now is FSU, MiamiFlorida, South Carolina, and Ohio St.

Most of the programs recruiting him want to see him at guard, but he prefers to play defense in college. “I’d like to play defensive tackle. I’m a run-stopper and I feel like I can help a team right away at that position, I can free up the linebackers to make plays.”

There will be several factors Smalls takes into account when he makes his college choice. “I’m looking for the right fit, where I’m comfortable and can help a team as a freshman. I’d like to play early in my career because it’ll help me get ready for professional ball,” he said. “I have family in South Carolina, but I’m a Florida guy. I’d like to stay in state.”

Smalls wants to continue to improve and be a dominating force on defense this season. “I want to lead the city in sacks and free up LB Kain Daub to do what he does well.”
