2015 Michigan Prospect: RB John Kelly, Oak Park HS

John Kelly from Oak Park, Michigan is proving that his stock is rapidly on the rise. Kelly’s game is dynamic and he’s a true athlete who can play and excel at either running back or safety. He currently weights in at 5″11, 190 lbs and runs a 4.45 40 yard dash. He is not currently ranked by any site, however, this will soon change when Kelly finally begins to take unofficial visits.

At running back, Kelly is a very compact runner who picks his holes and follows his blockers better than almost any other running back in the state of Michigan. Most people would think with his 40 time he would like run outside the tackles, but that is not the case. He’s actually is a very physical back with an excellent burst. On defense, Kelly is a very aggressive and physical hitter who wide receivers fear when they run across the middle. He needs to work on wrapping up the ball carriers instead of just going for the big hit.

His stats last season were very impressive which included 78 carries for 846 yards and eight TDs. On defense he recorded 64 tackles, four INTs, two forced fumbles, and on special teams racked up two KR TDs and one PR TD. This kid is going to make a college coach very happy and I predict it will be at running back.

I recently had the chance to talk to Kelly and ask him a few questions about his game and how his recruitment is going.

Q: What did you work on this off-season to improve your game?

A:  I’ve been running track running and working on my strength and speed conditioning. Also competing in 7-on-7 tournaments helped.

Q: What about your game sets you apart from others?

A: My aggressiveness, I give it my all on very play and I am not afraid to take on anyone on either side of the ball.

Q: Which NFL player does your game most resemble

A: Defensively Patrick Peterson, Offensively Adrian Peterson. On offense when I have the ball in my hands I run hard. On defense I am a player maker with or with out the ball, you will know I’m out there.

Q: What are your personal and your team goals this season?

A: Personal goals are for me to break the schools all-time rushing records, and to help my team in any way I can.

Q: What teams are recruiting you?

A: Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Cincinnati  Arizona, Indiana, Minnesota and Western Michigan.

Q: Do you have a timetable on when you would like to make a commitment?

A: No, not currently, I’m just letting the process take place.

Q: Do you have any visits set up?

A: I’m going to be visiting Michigan in a few weeks and early next month I will visit Minnesota.
