2014 MI QB Sleeper: Buck West

A few weeks ago I had the chance to go watch Buck West QB out of Pickney, Michigan. When looking at his film I was a bit confused as to why he had not committed to a school yet. I then asked him about which D1 schools he had offers from and his answer was he didn’t have one.  At 6’2 190 lbs and runs a 4.5 40 yard dash he has it all and then some, he has control of his offense and has great command in the huddle.

Alot of IVY league schools have offered him which says a lot about how smart he is. West is waiting to break out on the national scene, he just needs more exposure, which I feel is one of the biggest reasons he’s not getting as many looks. Last year he put up 1500 yards passing and 12 TDs.

West is completing roughly 70% of his passes and drops by his wideouts are something that don’t show up on the stat sheet. His performance so far this year was good enough to earn him an invitation to the Offense vs Defense All American Bowl.

Pros: West sees the field as good as any quarterback in the state, he is a great distributor of the ball and has a big arm. He has plenty of speed to tuck it and pick up first downs. However, he prefers to stay in the pocket looking for a receiver which is a huge plus.

Needs to work on: When I watched his game, he was a little rattled at first and sometimes does not trust his receivers causing him to hold onto the ball and make a late throw which resulted in an interception.

Overall: When West sets his feet he can be among the best QBs in the country. He has a live arm and reads the defense pre-snap, displaying his football I.Q . West has a sense of Johnny Manziel in his style of game play in the sense he is very effective scrambling in the pocket. At this point he is a better runner than he is a passer. Some coach who takes a chance on West is going to be happy they did. He’s as great of a kid as he is player. I know how hard of a worker he is and gives it everything he has on every play.
