New Iberia 2014 CB Daniel Lewis Keeping His Options Open

2014 CB Daniel Lewis (5’11, 194, 4.52) of New Iberia High in Louisiana considers himself a soft verbal commit to Hawaii. In addition to the offer from the Warriors, Tulane and Louisiana Lafayette have offered and haven’t given up on hopes of landing the big corner.

“I’ve stayed in touch with ULL coach Jay Johnson and Head Coach Mark Hudspeth. They’ve invited me to games and bowl practices. The staff wanted me to attend spring practice, but I had some conflicts with our own workouts.”

Lewis spoke about how the Green Wave continue to recruit him. “Head Coach Curtis Johnson has been sending me a lot of letters and showing me a lot of attention. He’s told me everything about the program and what they have to offer. Last season, I attended the Louisiana-Monroe/Tulane game,” he said.

He told Varsity Preps that he remains a soft verbal commit to Hawaii. “I was ecstatic; it was my first offer and it really came out of the blue,” Lewis said. “I committed to Coach Daronte Jones about a month ago. He’s lived in Louisiana and so we relate very well.”

The New Iberia prospect wants to make an informed decision before signing his Letter of Intent next February. “I want to be able to see into my future a little bit,” Lewis stated. “I want to know who I’m going to be around, who my brothers are going to be the next four or five years and what kind of talent the program is bringing in. I also want to get to know my coaching staff pretty well.”

The promise of early playing time won’t sway Lewis either way. “Everybody wants to play early, but I want to make sure by the time I get out on the field I’m ready. I want to be able to contribute early, but it’s not the main reason in choosing a program.”

He’s not concerned about leaving home to play college football. “I’m not shy about traveling and seeing new things. It’s really not that big of a deal to me.”

Lewis will attend the NFTC in Dallas this weekend followed by a 7-on-7 tournament with the Louisiana Bootleggers in Tallahassee. He plans to camp at ULL June 8th and is scheduling a date with LSU.

The junior standout said he wants to have a final decision made soon. “I still consider myself a soft verbal commit to Hawaii. We’ll see how things go over the summer, but I want to have everything figured out and be strong in my choice by the start of my senior season,” Lewis said. “I’m not sure I’ll take all five of my official visits because it might not be necessary. It really depends on the situation at a time.”
