2014 3 Star WR Garrett Johnson Commits to Kentucky
- Updated: July 28, 2013
Yahtzee! The University of Kentucky Football team strikes again, this time in the state of Florida, picking up talented 3 Star WR Garrett Johnson. Johnson is known for his superb hands, speed, and route-running ability. This has translated onto the field, receiving 735 yards with 8 Touchdowns. He also knows how to make plays rushing the ball, gaining 300 yards this past year. Garrett is the 3rd commitment at WR for the Wildcats behind 4 Star Thaddeus Snodgrass and 3 Star WR Trey “T.V.” Williams. Considering Kentucky is very thin at WR, Garrett is expected to make a big impact early on. I caught up with Garrett moments after his commitment to become a Kentucky Wildcat, and he sure was excited about the opportunity. Here is our interview:
RK: What’s up man? You’re a Kentucky Wildcat now! How does it feel?
GJ: It feels great!
RK: What led you to choosing UK over some of your other offers, including Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, and South Florida, among others?
GJ: The bond I had with the coaches. I just felt it was a great opportunity for me.
RK: What coach in particular was your main recruiter? Who did you have the best bond with?
GJ: Coach Scott
RK: Supposedly your showing at UK’s camp was unreal, and you really impressed the staff. How’d you feel coming out of the camp compared to the other Wide Receiver prospects out there?
GJ: I really didn’t know who were the receivers that they’d offered, but I really felt like I had a great camp.
RK: I heard you had great 40 times, running a consistent 4.5 there too. Is that your fastest time?
GJ: No sir, my fastest time is a 4.47.
RK: What separates you as a receiver? What is UK getting from your commitment?
GJ: My route running ability is what separates me. I can say that UK is getting a playmaker for them at the WR position.
RK: What are your goals for this upcoming season?
GJ: For my team to make the playoffs mostly. For me, I just want to have a great Senior season.
RK: UK has Jared Tucker, Darius West, Mike Edwards, and Shyquawn Pullium committed at Defensive Back positions. Who’s gonna win the 1 on 1 battles between you and each of those guys? They all said they would win, and Mike even went as far as to say he could “shut down ANY receiver out there.” Haha what do you have to say to that?
GJ: Haha you can tell the DB’s to be ready, because they do pay me for the feet and that I eat DB’s!
RK: Is there anything you’d like to say to the Big Blue Nation?
GJ: You can tell the Big Blue Nation I’m coming to Lexington hungry and that Kentucky is on the rise!
RK: Haha good man. Thanks for the interview. I’ll talk to you in the future! Good luck this season!
GJ: Thank you!
In addition to Garrett being hyped to join the Big Blue Nation, other UK commits including Jared Tucker are hyped for Garrett’s commitment. Tucker had this to say about his future Wildcat teammate: “I think he’s going to be a hard match up with anyone who lines up on him. Can’t wait to play with all the commitments we got!”
Kentucky Wildcat fans are excited for this commitment, as they should be, as they just got a truly dynamic athlete to suit up in the Blue and White. Here he is in action:
